Brahma Muhurta moves with sunrise every day. Pick your city to get today's window and a bedtime that lets you rise for it without dragging.

What Brahma Muhurta means

Brahma Muhurta, "the creator's hour", is the period just before dawn that Indian traditions have long treated as the best time for prayer, meditation, study and yoga. A muhurta is a unit of 48 minutes, and the day and night together hold 30 of them. Brahma Muhurta is usually counted as the second-last muhurta of the night: it begins 96 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before sunrise.

Because sunrise changes through the year, so does Brahma Muhurta. In Delhi it can start before 4 AM in June and after 5:20 AM in January. Cities in the east, like Guwahati, see it much earlier than cities in the west, like Mumbai, even though they share the same clock.

Some panchangs use slightly different methods, for example dividing the actual night length into 15 parts rather than using fixed 48 minute muhurtas. Times can then differ by a few minutes.

Rising early without running on empty

The tradition pairs early rising with early sleeping. Waking at 4:30 AM after going to bed at midnight leaves you with 4.5 hours, and no amount of morning calm makes up for that over weeks. To rise for Brahma Muhurta and still get 7.5 hours, most people need to be in bed between 8:30 and 9:30 PM.

  • Move bedtime first, then the alarm. Shift both 15 minutes earlier every three or four days until you reach your target.
  • Eat dinner by 7:30 PM. Ayurveda recommends a light, early evening meal, and so does modern sleep science.
  • Dim the house after dinner. Bright lights and screens late at night push your body clock later, the opposite of what you want.
  • Use the time well. Brahma Muhurta is valued for its stillness. If you spend it scrolling, you've given up sleep for nothing.

Is waking at Brahma Muhurta healthy?

Waking early is healthy if you also sleep early and get enough total sleep. Morning people tend to report better mood and fit more easily into school and office schedules. But nobody's health benefits from cutting sleep short. If your family or work schedule makes a 9 PM bedtime impossible, a consistent 6 AM rise with 7.5 hours of sleep is the better choice.
